Sundance has NewFrontiers, South by Southwest has Interactive and BIFF has DiMe, the DigitalMedia Symposium.

Boulder has become a center of cutting-edge techcreatives and DiMe, in its third year, highlights this bounty. Bringingtogether media entrepreneurs, artists, venture capitalists, and enthusiasts,the interactive symposium nurtures networking and the sharing of new ideaswhile showcasing those industries that are on the cutting edge of technology.

In this burgeoning world of transmedia, DiMestrives to identify commonalities among different players in digital media andfind ways they can work together. This year’s symposium will feature leaders inthe field of animation, digi-comics, gaming, social media, and digital branding.For the first time, DiMe will be introducing panelists speaking on the excitingnew developments in digital media in the realms of sports and music. Some ofthe participants include Dr. Alvy Ray Smith, two-time Academy Award-winner andco-founder of Pixar, local legend Micah Baldwin, CEO of TechStar companyGraphicly, and Academy Award-winning producer Don Hahn as moderator in histhird year participating with DiMe. From composers to geospatial modelers tosoftware developers and market strategists, DiMe is bringing in diverse perspectivesto shine light on this mutable, ever-evolving industry.

Boulder is known for its collegial atmosphere incomparison to other centers of high-tech media and the symposium features tworoundtables -- “Digitools of the Trade” and “Skills for Success in a DigitalWorld” -- as well as two quick networking sessions and a reception andnetworking following the event.

Founder Kathy Beeckis excited about the digital skill sets roundtable as she says that employersoften think they have to bring in employees from outside Colorado to fulfill certain skill sets. Asshe says the goal is to “identify what that skill set is and how we can buildthat skill set in employees right here in Colorado.”

DiMe is acollaboration between the Colorado Office of Film, Television & Media(COFTM), the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau (BCVB), and BIFF. Thisyear, DiMe received the first grant given by the Boulder Arts Commission underthe Arts and Business Collaborative heading. As Beeck says, “We think it is aperfect fit and couldn't be more excited about receiving the grant from BAC andcontinuing to build this synergy between arts and business, which we are reallytrying to do here in the Bouldercommunity.”

The afternoon willbe interactive and illuminating. DiMe is all about bringing people together tocelebrate the merging of creativity and technology that makes this area sovibrant in the field of digital entertainment. A couple of years ago Don Hahnand local filmmaker Michael Brown met while participating in DiMe panels. Thisyear their collaboration film, the feature documentary “High Ground,” will haveits world premiere at DiMe.

Here’s another fun BIFF preview event! Check out “Racing Dreams” at the Old Town Cinema in Louisville Saturday! This award-winning documentary (Jury Prize, Best Documentary, Tribeca Film Festival) will be presented on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Louisville Center for the Arts at 801 Grant St., in the beautiful period auditorium next to Memory Square.

“Racing Dreams” was a big hit at BIFF 2010. This year, its director Marshall Curry has a feature documentary in contention for Best Documentary at the Oscars – “If a Tree Falls . . . A Story of the Earth Liberation Front.” CURRY WILL INTRODUCE THE FILM VIA VIDEO! Oh, the magic of technology. DON’T MISS THIS EXCITING FILM! See Sheen & Son's latest -- "The Way"

Synergy.

In another amazing example of different organizations working together, BIFF is happy to announce that the Boedecker Theater at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2950 Walnut St. in Boulder, is showing the latest directorial effort of Emilio Estevez, "The Way." This film stars the director and his father, the latter of whom you may have heard of -- Martin Sheen?

This moving and complex spiritual epic was completed in 2010, and the unique collaboration between father and son is riveting. It is an excellent reminder of why Mr. Sheen is our guest of honor at BIFF on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Boulder Theater.

In the film, Martin Sheen plays an American doctor who comes to France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, or The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, he decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey. "The Way" was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago.

"The Way" marks the seventh film collaboration of father and son. Here's a lovely interview in America Magazine outlining the creation of the project, which stemmed from a pilgrimage Sheen and Taylor Estevez, Emilio's son, took along the Camino in 2003. (During that trip, Taylor met his future wife!)

So don't miss this wonderful film, not least so that you can ask Martin about it when he comes to town. It plays on Friday at 4:30 p.m.; Saturday at 3:30 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 7 p.m.! See you there!

LAST CALL for BIFF 2012 volunteers! Plus, do's and dont's

We are still looking for volunteers! Our annual Volunteer Orientations will take place this evening (Wednesday, Feb. 1) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon in the cozy confines of the Hotel Boulderado at 2115 13th St. in downtown Boulder.

We welcome both first-time and returning BIFFsters. Please join us, whether you have signed up online already or not. This is an excellent chance for you to get the complete information you will need to participate this year, to find out what our departmental needs are, and meet our team leaders. C'mon down!

Along this line of thought, we wanted to answer a "Dear BIFF" Facebook post we received last week. It asked: "how do i know as a volunteer which events i'll get into and which events i should buy tickets for? don't want to miss anything!"

To tell you the truth, if you don't want to miss anything, you really should buy a VIP pass! Sad as it may sound, volunteering for BIFF is not just a means to an end, a way to get into events -- and if that's your interest, we much prefer that you buy a ticket to the event in question and enjoy yourself.


We volunteer in order to make the yearly miracle of BIFF take place. That means we put aside our desire to see the films, celebrities and events we are working at so that we can make that experience as friendly and enjoyable as we can for those that have paid to be there. For instance, while I would love to watch the tribute to Martin Sheen in the Boulder Theater on Saturday afternoon, I will be busy working at the Filmmakers Panel in the Boulder Public Library at that time.

So, if you don't want to miss something -- BUY A TICKET FOR IT -- DON'T VOLUNTEER FOR IT! Most of us will find out about what we missed by checking the BIFF blog and website later for reports prepared by our Digital Communications team.

That being said, there are some awesomely fun things that being a volunteer will get you! Not only do you earn vouchers for screenings and events that you aren't actively working, all qualified volunteers (eight hours' service plus) will have access to our Filmmakers' Lounge at the Lazy Dog, 1346 Pearl St.! This exclusive hangout will be open ONLY to filmmakers, VIP passholders, staff and volunteers throughout the festival. If you want to hobnob with directors, producers, actors and other special guests, this will be your big chance to do it!

We also are throwing the party to end all parties -- the B.A.D.! The inaugural BIFF After Dark party will take place at Oddfellows Hall at 1543 Pearl St. from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday night. This hoedown/throwdown will feature films projected all over the venue, two live bands, comedy from Boulder's own Hippie Man, and food from Chipotle, beers from Avery and Boulder Beer, and wine from Francis Ford Coppola Winery. IT - WILL - BE - SICK. Filmmakers, VIP passholders, staff, and volunteers ONLY.

Plus, I think we each get a groovy BIFF 2012 T-shirt to wear. And we work hard and have fun! Many of my closest friends are those I've made over the eight-year history of BIFF. If you want to join the club, please do! . . . but don't ask anyone for their autograph. We're just the help!

Anger over women's health scandal: BIFF and "Pink Ribbons, Inc."

ARE YOU INCENSED over the decision announced Tuesday by the organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the group that co-opted and capitalized the iconic "pink ribbon" to support awareness and preventative treatment for breast cancer, to halt its funding of those efforts by Planned Parenthood? Here's a link to the story -- many advocates say that Komen caved in to pressure from right-wing groups who oppose a woman's right to choose . . . even if cutting off funds will make those women sicken and die.

If so, you must see the feature documentary we have scheduled for BIFF 2012. "Pink Ribbons, Inc.," directed by Lea Pool, will receive its Colorado premiere at BIFF on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 12:15 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1421 Spruce St.

This hard-hitting film blows the pink lid off of corporate"Pink Ribbon" marketing campaigns for breast cancer. Labeled a"dream cause" by marketing experts, the ubiquitous Pink Ribbon hasbeen hijacked by companies as diverse as Yoplait, Ford Motors and Kentucky Fried Chicken as a tool tosell their products. But where does this money go? Research has stronglysuggested that estrogen-imitating food and cosmetics additives are some of thecauses of the breast cancer explosion, yet the boards of cancer foundations aredominated by the very corporations that sell and deliver these products. Findout about the daily realities of breast cancer treatment, far below the pinkcloud of corporate double-speak, and see what you can do to change it.

The whole shebang -- here is your Offiicial BIFF 2012 starting gun!

We honor Martin Sheen live in person on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18 at the Boulder Theater.

The 8th Annual Boulder International Film Festival (BIFF), voted “one of the coolest film festivals in the world” by MovieMaker magazine, is already making headlines with a star-studded lineup of celebrity guests and today is rolling out its captivating and thought-provoking program. The Festival takes place in scenic Boulder, Colo., Feb. 16-19, and will bring films, filmmakers and international fans together for a four-day celebration of the fine art of filmmaking.

The Festival kicks off Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. with an Opening Night Red Carpet Gala and screening of "Darling Companion," courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics, directed by Lawrence Kasdan. "Darling Companion" tells the story of the bond between a woman and her dog, who she loves more than her husband. Kasdan and producer Anthony Bregman will be in attendance for a Q&A session after the screening.

Kevin Kline and Daine Keaton star in Lawrence Kasdan's new feature comedy, "Darling Companion," which opens the festival on Thursday, Feb. 16.

“BIFF continues to grow and prove itself as a respected, must-attend film festival with celebrities, screenings, and special events,” said Kathy Beeck, director of BIFF. “We’re confident that this year’s program offers some of the best films the industry has to offer and that the selection will resonate well with our community and attract film enthusiasts from across the country.”

BIFF will also feature “A Conversation with William H. Macy” on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7:15 p.m. and the Closing Night Film and Awards Ceremony featuring the Colorado premiere of the acclaimed new film "Chasing Ice" on Sunday, Feb. 19. Special guest Martin Sheen, critically acclaimed actor, will be honored with the “Master of Cinema Award” on the afternoon of Saturday, February 18.

“Chasing Ice”

Produced in Boulder by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jerry Aronson and Oscar-winningproducer Paula DuPré Pesmen, this breathtakingly beautiful film follows famed National Geographic photographer James Balog as he deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras throughout the Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world's changing glaciers.

Here's a wonderful short video from the American Geophysical Union about Balog's efforts that underlines the need to take in the information he has gathered visually -- meaning that "Chasing Ice" should be an enormous treat!



“5 Broken Cameras”
Soldiers fire into his video cameras and explode them with grenades, but it doesn’t stop Emad Burnat from documenting the courageous and chilling story of the Palestinian village of Bil’in—which famously chose nonviolent resistance against an often-brutal Israeli oppression.



“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”
From Lasse Hallström, the director of "Chocolat" and the Simon Beaufoy, Oscar-winning screenwriter of "Slumdog Millionaire," comes this inspirational comedy of a visionary sheik with a big dream—to bring salmon fishing to the desert. Starring Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Almost there! And so it begins

Our wonderful Workshops and Panels Coordinator Donna Crain grabbed these images at our Program Release Party on Thursday. It's the annual event at which members, sponsors and community representatives are given an exclusive sneak peek at our program for the year.

This year, the event was staged in a unique and beautiful venue -- that of the jeweler Todd Reed Gallery at 2015 Pearl Street. Thank you to Todd Reed (toddreed.com), and to Francis Ford Coppola wines, Avery Brewing, and Zoe Ma Ma for sponsoring our event. The performance by the Lemon Sponge Cake contemporary dance troupe was spectacular as well! And, as you can see, the party was a blast.

We're incredibly excited by this year's films and special guests. We will be announcing the posting of the 2012 schedule, along with tickets sales for all events, within hours. Stay tuned!
